There are a number of nutrition and lifestyle factors that have been shown to have an effect on both female and male fertility. Individual advice can be tailored to address your specific issues but there are certain factors that may be of help for anyone who is experiencing difficulties conceiving or maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

  • Eat natural, nutritious foods rather than processed convenience foods

  • Increase ‘healthy fats’ in your diet such as those in oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil or rapeseed oil. Healthy fats are necessary to produce all of your hormones and to produce healthy eggs and sperm.

  • Eat plenty of protein-rich foods such as lean meat, fish and diary but also to increase sources of plant proteins in beans, lentils, chick peas, tofu.

  • Eat lots of antioxidant rich foods such as brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Aim for 5-7 portions per day.

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Reduce stress

  • Exercise regularly. If you have not exercised in the past, taking up gentle exercise such as walking, yoga or swimming is excellent and will be beneficial in pregnancy also.

  • Avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine
