A basic semen analysis checks for the critical components that sperm require to achieve conception. Sperm need to be present, ideally at a normal concentration, and have sufficient mobility to reach the egg. If the semen sample shows some irregularities, further tests may be carried out to identify the underlying health issue.
It is important to optimise your overall health so as to maximise the chances of natural conception. Sperm quality and quantity may be specifically improved by individually tailored dietary and lifestyle changes. Additionally, there are medications, and occasionally surgical procedures, which may help to improve the quantity and quality of the sperm, although the chances of improvement will depend on the underlying cause. Even where sperm numbers are less than optimum, if quality is good, and the female partner is healthy, conception may result.
